A coverlet is a lightweight bedspread. It is mainly used for bedroom decoration. Apart from this, it also behaves as a cover for the bed sheet. Many people, however, are still not aware about the usage of a coverlet.

The term coverlet was known to people for many years in the early 19th century. The word coverlet is derived from the old French word covrir which means 'to cover' and lit means 'bed'. They are also called 'coverled'. They can also be used as blankets, and their light weight makes them very useful and convenient to carry during picnics, traveling, etc.

A coverlet is a lightweight blanket kind of cloth which can be put over the bed. It serves for bedroom decoration more than providing warmth.

Woven Coverlet

A woven coverlet is basically used for home decorating. It is made up of light wool.

You can also get woven coverlets in other fabrics like silk and linen. They are woven with various colors and in different symmetrical or geometrical designs. It is also made from coarse, scratchy materials. This type of coverlet is further divided into overshot weave coverlet and double cloth coverlets.

Quilted Coverlet

Quilted coverlets are thin and lightweight. They have a thin layer of batting between the upper and lower layers of the cloth. It can also be used to cover the old blankets. You can get quilted coverlets in various designs and colors. They are highly decorative and useful too.

What is a Coverlet Set?

If you buy only the coverlet then it may not serve its purpose completely, as it is used to decorate and beautify the room. Therefore, you need to have a whole coverlet set.

The coverlet set may consist of a coverlet, pillow shams, cushions and bed skirt. Pillow sham is the pillow cover which matches the coverlet and bed skirt is fitted under the mattress which hangs down to the floor and gives it a royal look. These upholstery can be easily removed and washed.
