Textured Ceiling Types

When it comes to giving a new look to rooms, the first thing that most of us think of is to paint the walls in different colors. Rarely does our attention go to the ceiling of the room.

This is because majority of the people are unaware how creatively done ceilings can add an altogether different dimension to the room. Textured ceilings are the new IT in interior painting, and can make any ordinary room look stylish and chic.

Choosing the right ceiling texture for a room can be quite confusing with so many different techniques, patterns, and designs that are used for creating faux ceilings, which is another name for textured ceilings. Popcorn Texture:
If you go to any home improvement store, you will find different kinds of texture material, which is available in the form of granular particles. It is added to the latex paint prior to its application on the ceiling. Popcorn ceilings can be achieved through sprays too.

There are sprays in which granules in aerosol form are set in a semi-liquid base. All you have to do to create this type of ceilings is to hand-spray it onto the surface of the ceiling.

Combed Texture:
If you prefer swirling patterns on the ceiling, then go for this technique. In this method, Sheetrock mud is first applied to the ceiling and then a trowel with triangular notches is used to create the swirling patterns.

If you have a central light fixture on the ceiling, you can use this technique to create concentric circles around it. This will give your room a very classy and formal look.

Knock-Down Texture:
To get this look, you need to first of all apply the texture material on the ceiling. After that, using a trowel or a taping knife, the peaks of the texture material are cut down. You will need to move the trowel or knife in various directions so that the surface of the ceiling gets an uneven, random appearance.

Rolled Texture:
You can be very innovative with a rolled finish look. First of all, Sheetrock mud, with very thin consistency, is applied to the ceiling by using long-nap paint rollers. After that, you can create any design of your choice on the ceiling using these rollers.

Skip-Trowel Texture:
You will need a wide trowel, silica sand, and drywall mud. Start with mixing together drywall mud and silica sand to form a mixture which has a thick consistency. Next, apply this mixture to the ceiling using the trowel.

However, by applying a little pressure, let the trowel skip the ceiling surface. Once you are done, again move the trowel (this time sans the mixture) over the ceiling surface to get an even look.

Self-Made Texture:
For all women who like experimenting, different designs can be created by wrapping things like a string on the roller and then painting the ceiling with it. Another good idea is to stipple the paint with a whiskbroom, comb, or any other thing that you think will create a different effect on the ceiling surface.

The various textured ceiling types mentioned above not only add aesthetic value to your room, but they are also very useful in hiding any imperfections on the ceiling surface. To make your room appear bigger and more airy, paint the finished ceiling with a light color.
