Roll Up Window Blinds

Madhura Pandit
Roll up window blinds, as the name suggests, are blinds that can be rolled up when not in use. Available in a variety of types and materials, they serve various purposes. Here is detailed information on these window blinds.
Roll up shades or window blinds have slats that are mainly used to prevent light from entering a room. The slats are made of wood, metal, fabric or even plastic. Metal blinds are usually used for outdoors as they are weather resistant and durable.
These blinds have a string or a cord which enables one to change the degree of slats, depending on the amount of light required. Slats can be horizontal or vertical. Horizontal blinds are more commonly known as Venetian blinds. The vertical roll up blinds, though not as common as horizontal ones, are easier to use and clean, and can even be used for doors.

Types

Vinyl Blinds

Vinyl is a shiny and flexible plastic. Vinyl blinds are commonly used as they are easy to clean and maintain. As they are maintenance free, they are more durable than other types of blinds.

Wooden Blinds or Bamboo Blinds

While these are mostly found in natural wood colors, some are also available in other attractive colors and designs. Bamboo blinds give a traditional and sophisticated look to your home.

Plastic Blinds

The plastic slats are closely bound to avoid any gaps in between. These are useful in bathroom and washroom as they stay unaffected by water or moisture. They can easily be cleaned with water. Plastic roll up window blinds are also used in kitchens.
Aluminum blinds, fabric blinds, faux wood window blinds, and honeycomb blinds are the other different types of roll up blinds. Mini blinds have very narrow slats to block out maximum sunlight.

Uses

Uses of window blinds are similar to that of window curtains. The basic use of a roll up window blind is to block out light or to adjust the amount of light that comes into your house. They are useful in summer as well as winter.
In summer, they block out excess sunlight, while in winter they help in keeping the room warm. They are also used for privacy purposes. Colorful or painted window blinds can also be used for decorative purposes.

Cleaning Options

Cleaning an outdoor window blind is simple. You just need water and a hose. Cleaning indoor window blinds is a little more time-consuming. Firstly, close the blind so that each slat gets separated. Then dust all the slats with a duster. Clean each individual slat with a wet cloth.
If you want them to be spotless, you can take them down and clean with soap and water or other recommended products. You can even use detergent to clean heavy stains on the blinds. You must remember to let the blinds dry completely before putting them in place again.
When buying, it is recommended to give preference to durability and the material of the blinds. Also check for the proper functioning of the cord to roll up the blinds. When closed, the blinds must also shut out the light completely. With the variety of options available in the market, you are sure to find the one you are looking for.
