Plus, the comfort of finally being able to sit down on something that does not prick like needles should be enough of a driving force. But how does one go about carrying forth furniture restuffing? That is exactly what we will tackle in the section that follows.

How to Restuff Couch Cushions

There are many reasons for why the cushion fillings in your sofa might turn to a lumpy mass. The most common being―constant usage. Then there is the factor of spills on the couch which contributes to ruining the stuffing as well.
In case the cushion covers are tattered and in really bad shape, it is advised that you change these completely by buying the required material and stitching new covers. However, if the cushion covers are in a good shape and only the stuffing has been compromised, then you can start off by replacing the same.

Replace with Original

The ideal way to go about restuffing the couch is to replace the material with the original material. This is a great way to ensure that the quality of the couch is not compromised. Some companies offer replacement products that can be ordered and the restuffing done just as easily.

The Restuffing Process

In case replacing the stuffing with the original material is not possible and workmen cannot be hired, you will have find other alternatives. The following process can be undertaken for the same.

Step # 1 - Find the Zipper

Most cushions have a zipper on them which keeps the stuffing from spilling out. Find the zipper so that you can get the stuffing out. In case your cushions do not have zippers, consider getting one stitched―this will ease things the next time you plan to restuff the cushions.

Step # 2 - The Stuffing Material

There are varied types of cushions stuffings―these are usually foam sheets that are placed one on top of the other, or pillows that are stuffed with cotton.
The other materials that are popular are cushions that are stuffed with feathers. However, these cushions come with a specialized cover so that the feathers cannot penetrate through the material. Once you know the kind of stuffing that has been used, it will become easier to continue.

Step # 3 - The Old Stuffing

Sometimes, only a part of the stuffing has gone bad and the other parts can be retained. Check what can be retained and what needs to be discarded.

Step # 4 - Measuring the Cushions

Next, measure the cushion covers for their width and height so that you can determine the amount of stuffing you need to buy.
If the width and height comes to 20 inches by 22 inches, then for the stuffing material you'll need to subtract 2 inches from the measurement. Which will make it 18 inches by 20 inches. This figure need not be an exact measurement though.
Another thing that can be considered is the depth of the foam. In case you're stacking the foam sheets one on top of the other, then thicker sheets will require less number of the same.

Step # 5 - How Much to Buy

If the couch cushions are made of foam mattresses, then you'll need to buy the material depending on the amount of cushions that the couch has, as well as how thick you want the sheets to be. There are varied choices that one can make in the quality of the foam mattress. Look through the choices and choose one that suits your needs.
In such a case, the pillow is wrapped with a sheet of cotton batting (of the desired thickness) and an even, smooth flow achieved.

How much batting you buy will depend on the condition of the couch. If it's in very bad shape then you'll need to replace the whole batting. But if it's not, then you can simply add to the batting.

Step # 6 - Cotton Batting

Cotton batting is a sheet made of soft bale of cotton. This is used to bring about an even texture to the cushion. For example, if the pillow has been stuffed with cotton balls or foam, an even, smooth structure cannot be achieved because of the type of material.

Step # 7 - Cutting and Stuffing

Once you have the foam mattress, cut the sheets to the required size―2 inches lesser than the cushion cover measurements.
Depending on the fullness that you want, you can cut as many sheets as you need.

Stuff these into the cushion and spread evenly. If there is trouble getting them to stay in a single line, glue them first and then stuff them. Then zip the cushion.
And that's how you go about restuffing the couch cushions and reviving your home furniture. Sometimes people are confused about how to go about restuffing leather couch cushions as well. One follows the same steps―check to see the kind of stuffing there is, buy the required stuffing material after you've measured the sizes (2 inches less in height and width) and then carefully restuff the cushion.
