Made from solid wood or laminated wood veneers, parquet tiles are durable and quite inexpensive to install. Which is why, many homeowners choose them as their kitchen, bedroom, and living room floors.

Things to Consider

First of all, if there is a previously-glued or installed floors, you will have to remove it before installing the new tiles. Without removing the old flooring, the new one won't stick properly. If you don't want to take the extra effort, there is a way to go around it.

What you can do is purchase ¼'' wide plywood sheets and place them in the area where the new flooring is supposed to be installed. This way, a new flooring level will be created. While laying the new plywood sheets, do remember to secure them in place with screws.

Many people think that a hammer and few nails can get the job done. But that would be a mistake. Once the sub-floor is ready, we can move on to installing the new floor in.

How to Install Parquet

Step 1

Use a soft broom and mop to clean the area, and also make sure that there aren't any rough spots on the floor. Check if there are no loose nails or screws sticking out of the sub-floor, old paint, wax, sealants, adhesives, or any damage to the floor. Once the floor is dry, clean, and debris-free, you are ready to move forward.

Step 2

You will need parquet tiles (pre-cut), trowel, measuring tape, table saw, flooring glue, and chalk for the installation. With a measuring tape, find the middle of all 4 walls and mark them all using a chalk. This way, you will have 4 perpendicular lines running from the walls to the middle of the room.

Step 3

First we will work near the 4 chalk lines so that we can be absolutely sure that once the flooring is installed, the tiles will be centered perfectly. For that, we will need the pre-cut tiles, trowel, and flooring glue. With the trowel, spread the flooring glue so that you can place 3 to 5 tiles at a time.

Hold the trowel at a 45º angle, and spread the glue around the area as smoothly as you can. Immediately, start laying the tiles one after the other, making sure they are all lined perfectly. Resembling the chalk line we made earlier, follow it while placing each tile starting from the middle of the room, and going closer towards each wall.

Step 4

Be very careful while installing the first batch of tiles as they need to be assembled correctly. If any of the tiles are out of line, the entire alignment will be off and the flooring won't be as elegant as it should be.

Now once the first line is placed correctly, pick the innermost section of the room to proceed further. This way, as you keep laying the tiles, you will come closer towards the door, and won't walk on your freshly-laid flooring.

Step 5

Now, the assembly might differ depending on the kind of design you choose for the room. So it will be a judgment call when you are ready to lay the tiles down. But do keep in mind that the center of the design needs to be in the middle of the room, and you need to work your way towards the door as you install.

Note: - You can place the tiles on the floor before securing them in place with blue masking tape. This way, you will know what the design looks like in the room before the actual installation.
