Knockdown texture is one of the best ways to give your ceiling a different finish. It will also help spruce up the entire appearance of your room. Here's more on how to apply it yourself.
There are various types of textured designs that help in giving your ceiling a great finish. Moreover, you can have these in small or large patterns according to your choice.
Knockdown is basically a way of painting and mudding the ceiling to give it a unique-textured look. It is one of the best drywall texture techniques that you can opt for. It enhances the look and also helps in hiding any imperfections occurred during installing a drywall, its taping, and mudding.

Tools Required

  • Acoustical spray gun
  • Compressor
  • Hopper
  • Knockdown knife
  • Bucket
  • Sheetrock joint compound
  • Water
  • Safety goggles
  • Cap

Before Application

  • Make sure you cover all the items in the room using sheets, before starting the procedure.
  • Also cover the floor, as it can get messy while doing this job.
  • Put on the safety goggles and cap.
  • You will need to work on the ceiling in sections. Take a section of about 3x4 feet at a time.
  • The previous texture of the ceiling (if any) must be scraped off before applying the new one.
  • The hopper will be attached to a gun, which has a trigger that allows you to adjust the amount of liquid that flows out. Adjust the spray gun to the second largest opening and set the compressor to 10-15 psi for getting the perfect texture.

Procedure

Step 1

Mix the Sheetrock joint compound with water. Add water to the compound until it slightly thickens. Remember that it should not be too thin or thick, as it can jam the gun's nozzle. It is essential to test the consistency by having a few test sprays on a plastic sheet.

Step 2

Start spraying the mixture on the ceiling. Make sure that the spray pattern is not uneven. Once you cover the decided section, leave it for drying for about 20 minutes. Apply the second coat and wait for another 20 minutes.

Step 3

The compound should not be completely dry; it needs to be slightly sticky to be perfectly worked over. Take the knife, hold it at a flat angle close to the compound, and move it across. Do not dip it completely into the compound; simply move it gently over the compound. Move the knife back and forth to get a rough finish.
Clean the knife with water and towel in between the task. Once you apply the texture to one section completely, let it dry, and then move on to the next section.

Step 4

After applying the texture to the entire ceiling, wait for a day to let the compound dry completely. Paint the ceiling with the desired color using a roller. Opting for light shades is recommended.
Going for knockdown ceiling texture while doing the interior decoration will definitely give a classic, rustic touch to your interiors.
