In case its size is medium, an island with a width of 30 - 35 inches would be suitable. Even this medium-sized island requires a lot of space for accommodation. The ideal option is to get one with a breadth of 24 - 30 inches. 
These small islands is also available with wheels, hence portable, and is most suitable for a normal sized kitchen. Two small islands work better than a single bigger one.

Shape:

A kitchen island is available in L, G, and U shape. Mostly, a G-shaped one is preferred. However, you can customize it in shapes of square, rectangle, or even a triangle. If you wish to go by the latest trend, then get one in round shape. It adds class and grace.

Designs:

There are islands designs based on the material used for making. Granite counter top made from granite and marbles is preferred as it provides you with an area for cooking where you can comfortably and safely perform various cooking and baking activities.
Granite counter tops are a little expensive. They are still preferred for their durability and resistance against heat and scratch. On top of these, it is easy to clean. A kitchen island is light in weight if the counter top is wooden. However, you can also use stainless steel to make the counter top.
Earlier, islands were mostly fixed. But nowadays, they are often equipped with wheels and designed in a way that allows them to be folded up whenever needed. A portable one can be moved from place to place and are the best for small kitchens and especially suitable for you in case you are an occasional user.
The folding type is well suited for camping purposes as well. As per design, an island in American-folk, French-country, traditional, and hip styles are also very popular.
