Soundproofing your existing windows is the simplest solution to block the unwanted noise. Moreover, it works out really cheap as compared to the replacement of your existing windows with new soundproof windows.

Although, soundproofing your windows professionally is a good option, it depends on the purpose.

If you wish to soundproof your windows for an ultimate theater experience or, just to contain music in the room or, block the noise of the band playing in the neighborhood, then spending thousands of dollars to get it done from a professional is not a very good option.

Instead, you can do it all by yourself, which would in turn work out cheaper and you will have a soundproof room.

It is easy to soundproof your windows. In fact, you would accomplish the task in just a few hours. However, what is important is the accuracy, and you have to be careful with cutting and pasting the material, if you want 100% soundproof windows.

The process of soundproofing windows is called plugging, in which we are going to fill the window space with thick foam to keep out the unwanted sound. Now, while you are doing so, unfortunately you would be blocking the sunlight from penetrating into your room too.

But, you can always create a frame or plug which can be detached from the window to allow the sunlight in.

Step #1
Firstly, identify if there are any cracks or spaces around the edges of the window. You can discover them by just placing your hand around the edges, and if you feel the air, that's the spot or crack you are looking for. Mark all these spots.

Now, use the acrylic sealant to fill in these cracks and gaps thoroughly. With this major part of your job is done. Let's get to the next step.

Step #2
Now look at your window and decide the space you want to soundproof. With the help of a measuring tape, measure the dimensions of the window and write them down, in case you forget.

Since this is the most important part, accuracy is required, check the measurements twice or thrice, just to be precise and exact.

Once, you are sure about your measurements, move on to cutting the foam.

Mark the dimensions of the window on the foam sheet and make sure you do a prefect job with the markings, since you would want the cut piece to fit in the windows snugly, ensuring 100% soundproofing. The cut sheet of foam will decide the accuracy of the job hence, be careful.

Step #4
Now, comes the installation part. Place the foam you have cut, inside the window frame. Make sure you do not press it against the pane, since that will trap air, causing air pockets. The installation should be airtight, with no gaps in between and no air pockets. Your job is almost done with this step!

Step #5
Once your plug fits in your window frame closely yet comfortably, you can skip the sealing process, as this will give you at least 90% soundproofing. However, if you want to further soundproof your windows for absolutely no noise, then you can use the parcel tape to seal the edges of the foam plug.

Now, if you want to seal the window up all the time you can use glue in between the window and the foam sheet to fix it permanently. But, if you want to remove the foam out, to let the sunlight in your room, you can just remove the tape and pull the plug out. Fix it in again as and when required.
