How to Make Textured Paint for Walls

The process of making textured paint is one that is simple to follow. The steps to the process have been enlisted here.
  • Start by preparing a paint base, preferably with white latex paint. This paint forms the base of the colored paint you are going to use, and a smooth one at that.
Decide on a color you wish to use on the wall, along with the texturing medium. Whatever color you decide on, it is a good idea to choose a shade or two darker than the actual color you want. This is because the color may become lighter once you add the texturing medium.
  • Decide on the medium you want to use to add texture to the wall. Sand is a great choice as a texturing medium, as it adds grit without making the surface look too rough. Further, the uneven textures that are created by using sand are beautiful and add the right amount of depth to the wall.
  • However, there are other mediums that you can choose from such as drywall compound or dry Sheetrock.
  • Add the texturing medium in small amounts to the colored paint, in small quantities at regular levels. Sieve the medium so as to avoid any lump formation in the paint. Stir constantly with a stick, while adding the texturing medium.
  • Keep adding the texturing medium till you achieve the desired paint consistency. If you are using the paint for a ceiling, then make it thicker so that it adheres to the surface well. Else it can be slightly thinner for walls.
  • With the textured paint now ready, apply it on the desired surface to achieve a beautiful textured effect!
If you want to carry out texture painting on walls or any other surface without adding a texturing medium, you can create texture just by use of various colors and the use of texture painting tools.
There are a variety of such tools in the market, such as textured paint rollers that help create outstanding finishes. All you have to do is dip them in the paint and apply the texture on your wall. Even if you are creating a painting, you can use a lot of other elements and colors to add texture to your painting.
It is not always necessary that the surface you want to give texture to should be rough or uneven.

Textured Paint Ideas

With the ability to create various textures and make your own texture paint, there are loads of texture painting techniques which you can utilize. In addition, a fair amount of information about color psychology will help you come up with a catchy color scheme for your room.
Before that, decide the area you want to highlight. For instance, it could be the ceiling in a white room, or one wall against which you want to place your prized piece of furniture. Here are some ideas to inspire you: As mentioned earlier, sand is a great texturing medium.
It doesn't make the surface too uneven, yet gives the right amount of depth to the surface it is used on. Use sand in a deep color such as black, deep red, brown, navy blue, or gold to add texture to that wall.
  • Use a coarse paint brush to give the surface brush strokes in various directions and create an abstract texture on the wall.
  • Create motifs with texturing mediums. For instance, you could use an autumn leaf dipped in a paint of a complementing color to the base paint, and use it to stamp the entire surface.
Use a comb to achieve a rough textured effect on your wall or work of art. While you may create a checkered pattern with a comb, you can also stroke it in random directions for an abstract look.
Whether used for interior painting or for the purpose of highlighting a painting, using texture will give it a unique quality. When you know how to make textured paint, it just makes the task much simpler for you to do. Enjoy creating your own variety of textures.
