How to Install Corrugated Roofing

One of the easiest and best options to cover the patio, without any professional help, is corrugated roofing. Previously, corrugated roofing was not considered durable but nowadays, with improved technology, their durability has increased and they are considered better than roofing tiles.

It has become one of the easiest way to give your house a beautiful look. They are cheap, have great strength, can bear considerable amount of weight, and give good insulation. These qualities make them perfect for roofing. The best part of these roofing is that they can be installed by any one who has enough tools with a basic idea of its installation.

Corrugated roofing is different from the normal roofing as they have alternating grooves and ridges which makes it more strong and durable than normal roofing. It is lightweight, and can be found in the form of panels or sheets. You can also get panels with pre-drilled holes which makes the installation easier and faster.

Corrugated roofing can be found in different materials like metal, plastic, fiberglass, etc. So, firstly, decide the material you're going to use before starting the installation. The procedure for installation of all the type of corrugated roofing will be same. Following are the various steps involved in installing metal corrugated roofing.

• Claw hammer
• Steel tape
• Electric circular saw with carbide-tipped blade
• Chalk line
• String
• Nail apron
• Utility knife
• Corrugated metal sheets
• Measuring tape
• 3-inch sheet-metal roof nails
• Ridge caps
• Standard roofing felt

► Firstly, measure the roof so that according to it you can get the metal sheet. Cover the entire roof and also, keep in mind the overlapping area to aid proper installation. To get the exact number of sheets, measure the total area to be covered and divide it with the size of corrugated roofing sheet. The result is the number of panels or sheets required.

► Now, you need to calculate the number of ridge caps which you will need to cover the edges. So calculate the edges of the roof and the length of the ridges in feet. Divide the measurement with 6 to get the number of ridge caps required.

► Now, cover the roof with the help of standard roofing felt. Staple the felt on every three inches on the edge of your roof and six inches on the interior side. Each felt should overlap each other by at least 3 inches.

► Now place the first sheet on the roof so that it hangs about 2 inches outside the roof. Use galvanized nails to avoid rusting. Put the nails with water tight washers which will prevent the sheets from spoiling. Insert the nail on the ridge which is in the center and is bent away from the roof surface. You can use 20 to 22 nails in one sheet.

► Now place the second metal sheet next to the first one so that the ridge of the second sheet should overlap the first. Place a caulk bead between the two sheets which will prevent the water leakage. Put the nail in the similar way as the first one. Repeat the procedure with the rest of the sheets till you reach the end of the row.

► Start with the second row by placing the first metal sheet of the second row in a way that it overlaps the first sheet of the first row by 6 inches. Now, nail it similar to the previous row and complete the row. Follow the same procedure for all the rows. You can put some of the fiberglass or plastic sheets with the metal ones to get light inside the room.

► Once you have completed the installation of the metal sheets, it's time to place the ridge caps. Install the ridge caps at the slope edges and ridge of the roof. This prevents from water leakage.

Well, if we talk about corrugated metal roofing prices then a moderate roof pitch of 8 inches rise for every 12 inches will be around $7 per square foot. The price may vary according to type of metal used. Plastic and fiberglass corrugated roofing will cost less than the metal roofing.

If installed properly, corrugated roofing can last for more than 50 years. Paint them to protect from harsh weather conditions. Take proper precautionary measures to avoid accidents.
