How to Build a Loft Bed?

Let us have a look at the procedure used in constructing a loft bed that covers a floor space of 48 x 78 inches. In order to construct a loft bed, minimum height of the ceiling should be 8 feet. If it is more than 8 feet, the headroom would be a comfortable one. Mattresses used for loft beds need to be 38 inches wide and 76 inches long.
Now let us find out the materials used to construct these beds:
  • One sheet of 3/4 inch thick plywood with 4 x 8 feet dimensions.
  • Four pieces construction-grade with 8 feet length.
  • Three pieces 1" x 3.5" lumber boards that are eight feet long.
  • Drywall screws, lag bolts.
  • Three regular lumbar with dimensions 2 x 6 x 8 inches.
To begin with the process of building loft beds, one should cut the first two pieces of 2 x 6s to a length of 78 inches and remaining two pieces to 37 inches each. These four pieces should be joined to form a box with dimensions 40" x 78". Drywall screws must be used to secure these pieces together.
After the box is constructed, a plywood should be cut and fitted properly to match its size. The 4 x 4s should be cut at 44 inches. Two 4 x 4s must be positioned such that they are 78 inches apart and their outer edges are parallel to each other. The platform should be tilted on the posts so that top portion of the plywood touches the lines on posts.
These posts should then be connected to the platform with lag bolts. The next step in this process is that of lifting the frame and positioning it properly. A ladder proves to be useful in entering the loft bed with ease. The 2 x 6s are used to build steps for the ladder by placing them between the posts.
One can decorate or embellish the loft bed in many different ways. Loft beds help utilize the space in an efficient manner. One can make use of these plans for constructing a nice and comfortable bed for kids at home.
