Pragya T
House painting preparation translates into a lot of planning and work. From cleaning the walls to selecting the colors, we will guide you in indoor and outdoor house preparation before painting...
Preparing the house for painting takes more time, than actually painting the house. A lot of hard work and patience is required when preparing the house prior to painting. Here are some do it yourself tips and tricks that will help you in the job.

Interior Preparation

Step I - Planning

The first step involved in interior painting is planning. Plan where you are going to temporarily store your furniture and other things, and in what order the painting of the rooms should be done.
You also need to plan whether it will be first exterior and then interior, and if you are painting the interior first, then which room should take priority. It is a good idea to get the living room painted first, so that when the paint job is taking place in your bedroom or other rooms, everybody can stay in the living room, temporarily.
The last phase is to select the colors for the exteriors and interiors of your home. Choosing colors for exteriors is not difficult, as there are fewer options and 3-5 colors are generally used to paint exteriors. For house painting color ideas, use color samples or software that create painting simulations and help to select the right colors for your walls.
This will give you a good idea about the interior paint colors and ideas for individual rooms. Refer to interior paint reviews to select the best paints. Calculate the average house painting cost, cost of primers and sealers, and the finishes you will need for your walls.

Step II - Repairs and Removal

The next step in interior painting preparation is to repair any faults that the walls, windows, or doors have.
Then remove all the furniture from the room. Things which can't be moved out of the room, should be covered with clean plastic sheets. Remove all the paintings or decorative hangings from the walls and ceilings.
Get rid of any tails, tags, or tape on the walls; and for electrical safety switch off all plugs and cover the electric plates. Gather your basic tools to clean the walls, like paint scraper, sandpaper, putty knife, wire brush, and a water pipe. Remove all the paint from the walls.

Step III - Cleaning the Walls

Make sure the walls are clean and dry, and free of any loose paint or grease. After this vacuum your room to get rid of the dust and the old paint. Clean and dry the walls, ceiling, and floor.

Step IV - Painting the Walls

Paint the walls with a primer or sealer. These help in covering up different stains and cracks in the walls, and make your paint and the walls more durable.
Make sure the primer or sealer you applied to the walls is dry. Then paint the walls with colors. After the paint dries, you can try some wall designing ideas.

Step V - Finishing the Walls

Wait for this to dry and apply the final coat of finish. Choose semi-gloss finish for your kitchen and bathroom and flat finishes for your bedroom and living room.

Exterior Preparation

Step I - Planning and Cleaning

After deciding the exterior paint color combinations and have the estimate of the average cost, it is time for cleaning the exteriors. Clean and dry the exterior walls with water. If you have mold or mildew remove it with antifungal products.

Step II - Repairs and Scraping the Old Paint

Fix the exterior house walls if you find holes or cracks and scrape off all the old paint with the scraping tools.
Cover the areas which are not to be painted, like the trim of the house and windows. Cover the outdoor furniture, sideways, driveways, bushes, shrubs, and other things to protect them from dripping paint.

Step III - Painting the Exteriors

After this, you are ready to paint the exterior of your house.
Always start from the top part of the house and then proceed to the middle and finally the bottommost part of the home, for example, paint gables first, then the main sliding, windows, trim, and finally the doors. Latex is a good paint choice when it comes to painting the exteriors.
So, whenever you are getting ready for a makeover of your house follow these house painting ideas and the chore will become extremely easy.
