A Guide to Full Size Bed Measurements

Arjun Kulkarni
A full size bed is a dream to behold, just make sure that it can fit into your bedroom. Constant, mindless sales pitches can sometimes skew your judgment about buying the right size. But be careful while choosing it according to your size, decor, and budget.
The Beatles just loved sleeping like logs after a hard day's night ... Or at least that's what they said. And to be able to sleep really well, one needs to have a bed of the appropriate size.
If you're making your own bed, you need to know the exact measurements, otherwise you may end up making it a bit too big, or a bit too small for you. And since the full size mattress dimensions are fixed, you need to know the exact size.

Common Measurements

Now you know that the two basic beds are the single bed and the double bed. But did you know that there is a fair bit of variation in these as well? The variations exist so that people who are taller or who need more space can be accommodated.
While designing bed sizes, two things were to be kept in mind. The first is obviously that the person whose bed it is needs to be able to sleep on it comfortably, and secondly, the floor space it occupies. So, if the bedroom in your house is smaller, it is scarcely possible for you to fit in a large-sized bed.

Standard Single Bed

The full size of a normal single bed (also known as 'twin size bed') is 39" wide X 75" long. You will find that this bed gives the resident the maximum width on a per person basis. This bed is one of the most common ones available, and is big enough to accommodate an average person.

Single Extra Long

Taller people might want to have the comfort of a slightly larger bed. It is 5" longer than its standard counter-part, so even the tallest among us can sleep well. This bed is 39" wide X 80" tall. Finding mattresses and other bedding might be a little difficult though.

Standard Double Bed

As the name suggests, it is designed for two individuals. It is 75" long and 54" wide. As said, this bed severely shortchanges the sleepers on width as the per person is much lesser at 27". But of course, it is a good option for smaller rooms, and can still fit two people.

Queen Size

Queen size bed is fit for a queen and even her king. It's for those who find standard double bed a bit narrow. Measurements are 60" wide X 80" long means each person is given a queenly 30". It is also 5" tall, so a tall queen can sleep peacefully.
Giving the vague impression that the Californian Queen is taller than any other queen, the Californian queen gets a bed four inches taller, and the measurements for her bed is 60" wide X 84" long. Another one is Olympic queen size bed for the queen who is albeit not as tall as the Californian one (80" long), surely trumps her in width (66" wide).

King Size

As the dimensions will tell you, this one is fit for an emperor. The size of this colossus (comparative) of a bed are 76" wide X 80" long. Which means that you have 38" space for each citizen of this bed, and 80" tall means that most of us will surely fit into it.
And carrying forward the assumption that the Californian royalty is taller, is the California King Bed. It is 72" wide X 84" tall.

Some Bed Ideas

As you can see, there are quite a few choices for you to choose from in your bedroom furniture. So make sure that you pick the best one!
