Have you gotten used to the idea of having your parents fuss about the nitty-gritty of choosing bedroom linen? Are you daunted by the task at hand, of choosing the bedding for your dorm room? The solutions to all your questions, lie ahead.
You enter your new college campus, with a smile on your face, humming George Michael's Freedom! '90. It does not take you long to drift away to the world of dreams, which is crowded by new friends, parties, and studies (as an afterthought!).
And then as swiftly as dreams had captured your mind, reality strikes, thanks to the dingy and tiny space that will be 'home' to you for the next four years. Dorm rooms have a way of adding negatives to the pros and cons checklist of college life, which is why, it is essential to give the dorm room furnishings a makeover, and make the space your own. And focusing your attention on your bedding is, maybe the perfect place to start.
Most college dorm rooms have furniture, which is very basic and utilitarian, and staying in this room comes with quite a long list of dos and don'ts. Sure, you can try and personalize the space, but forget about painting the walls or changing the stained wallpaper. Also, unless you are aiming at being suspended in the first week of college, do not use that hammer on your room wall. If you really want to give the room some elan, try and opt for stylish and comfortable bedding.
The bedding in your room is an important constituent of college dorm furniture. Since you are going to be spending a lot of your time at college, and in your dorm, it is necessary that the bed is comfortable. Buying your bedding should, to a huge degree, be influenced by your tastes, sleeping pattern, and lifestyle.

Bedding Essentials

Are you unsure about what you need to buy so that your bedding set is complete? Well, here is a list of the basics you would require.

Sheets

Obviously, you will be provided with a basic bed and a mattress, but you need to get sheets for the same. Most dorms are furnished with extra-long twin beds, therefore, ensure you buy sheets that fit these beds. You will not need a sheet with a very high thread count, but make sure that the quality is good. Also, buy your sheets according to the climate of the place your college is situated in. Opt for flannel sheets for cold climes and cotton sheets for warmer ones.

Pillows

It is possible that you have a favorite pillow, which accompanies you everywhere, But if not, then make sure that the pillow you choose is comfortable, and supports your neck and back properly. Depending on your preference, you can choose a soft, medium, or firm pillow. You can also have a few extra pillows for extra comfort.

Blankets/Comforters

Buy comforters or blankets, keeping in mind the weather of the place. You can choose them according to their thread count, but more importantly the warmth they provide.
Though, these are the essentials that will ensure that your bedding is usable, there are several other items that will add to the comfort level of the bedding for your room. It is advisable to opt for a mattress pad or a memory foam. Most dorm bed mattresses are extremely hard to sleep on. You can buy either an egg crate mattress pad or a double foam one, whichever suits your budget.
Alternately, you can opt for a memory foam mattress bedding. You could also buy a few throw pillows in various colors to decorate the room. If you want to add more decorative elements, you can also buy shams, which are false decorative pillows and bed-skirts to hang below the comforter. A duvet cover is also a good idea, in case you intend to have your friends hanging out in your room.

How to Choose the Bedding

Choosing your bedding can seem like an un-inventive and mundane task, but it is an important one, unless you want to be spending through your nose on the furnishings every six months or so. There are several things to be kept in mind while shopping for bedding for the dorm.
  • Ensure that the bedding is durable, and will be able to sustain the wear and tear of the four years that you will spend at college.
  • Unless you are going to wait for your trips home, to wash your bedding, you will need linen that is easily maintained and washable.
  • It would also be a good idea to stock up on extras for your bedding, which will spare you the multiple trips to the laundromat.
  • While most college students will be on the lookout for cheap bedding, it may not be a good idea to scrimp on these essentials. At the same time, you do not need luxury bedding. Choose the one that is of a good quality.
  • It is important to consider the amount of time you will take to make the bed. You do not want your room to look disheveled and messy.
  • As mentioned earlier, the most important thing to look out for is comfort.
  • If you are dreading shopping for these different items that you need for a complete bedding set, you could buy a bed in a bag set, which contains all your basics, like sheets, blankets, pillowcases, etc.
There are several websites that offer you a plethora of options to choose your favorite style of bedding from. It is also a good idea to be on the lookout for end-of-season or back-to-school sales that offer huge discounts. If you are a part of a sorority or a fraternity, it would be a good deal to opt for group discounts.
While functionality is important, do not allow it to take over your dorm room. There are several ideas that will allow you to infuse your space with a dash of style. Choose colors and themes that will help uplift your spirits at the end of the day. Make sure that these colors do not clash with your roommate. You could probably consult him/her beforehand, in order to match your color and theme choices, or you could opt for neutral colors.
Take this as an opportunity to express your individuality. If you are a huge fan of college sports and activities, you could use your college colors for your bed. You could also choose themes, like, movies, fashion, music, sports, and play around with these themes to create a room with character. While bedding for girls tends to be a little more coordinated and frilly, bedding for guys is generally masculine and rugged.
So, go on and have a great time choosing your dorm room bedding, and personalizing your corner to reflect your tastes.
