It is important to have knowledge of carpet styles before buying them, for it is the firm foundation upon which to begin your journey of carpet shopping. Construction of a carpet, pile types, and their styles are the factors influencing the look and feel of the carpet. They all have their individual strengths and make amazing carpets.
So, do you want the soft, plushy feeling underfoot? Or are you looking for something with tough and durable traits? Ultimately, it all depends on your choice and comfort, and the look desired by you for your home. Read on for the classification.

Carpet Construction

You walk on it. You lie on it. You play on it. But where does it come from? Is it some old women out there who yarns every single strand of fiber steadily until it is enough to fit a room? Certainly not!
There are two primary ways of making carpet which are discussed as under. Knowing the types of carpet constructions will guide you to make the right choices for your lifestyle.

◈Tufting

Tufting is a technique of creating carpets, or multi-needle looms using machines which are directed by computers, to create various styles and patterns of carpet using synthetic yarns. Tufts are basically yarn fibers, either of natural fabric or synthetic base.
Hundreds of needles stitch a number of rows of carpet yarn tufts through a backing fabric called the primary backing. The needles push the yarn through a primary backing fabric, where a loop holds the yarn in place to form a tuft as the needle is removed.
These tufts project from the surface of the base, and may be loops, as in a Berber carpet, or the loops are cut using blades to create a cut pile carpet. The tufted carpet has a reputation of being sturdy and durable for a long time.

◈Weaving

Weaving can be done by hands or on the looms by machines. A woven carpet is created on looms by simultaneously interlacing face yarns and backing yarns into a complete product, eliminating the need for a secondary backing.
A small amount of a special back coating is usually applied to woven carpets to create bulk. Woven carpets are more luxurious and of premium quality, which is of course reflected in their price.

Carpet Piles

There are two basic types of piles: loop pile and cut pile. These two piles are used in their unadulterated forms, or in combinations to create various patterns and textures of carpet, known as carpet styles. Besides the softness and warmth, there are various features that make your carpet just perfect to meet your lifestyle needs. Let's learn the types.

◈Loop Pile Carpet

Loop piles are actually the base for all kinds of piles. They can have different lengths of loops, which can have tufts of different heights depending on the resultant textured effect.
A looped carpet is often referred to as Berber, which is the most popular modern carpet, offering flecks of colors. Berbers are huge yarns made of olefin fiber or nylon. This makes them most suitable for areas inducing high traffic, such as commercial carpets in offices.

The look it gives: A textured flooring look with long-lasting abilities.

Level loop pile

This type consists of the loops constructed of the same height. Patterns can be imprinted on them. Usually, the carpets made from this type are smooth and homogeneous; hence, it doesn't offer a clear texture, just an illusionary effect.

Use: Fantastic for high traffic, so it can be used in kitchen flooring, staircases, living rooms, and family rooms.

Multi-level loop pile

This loop pile type involves variations in the heights of loops, providing subtle patterns. Colors can be incorporated too to give an enhancement to the carpet.

Use: It is most useful for busy rooms. Carpets involving speckles can help to hide dirt.

◈Cut Pile Carpet

Loops are cut during manufacturing, forming the cut pile type, as we have already discussed. Cut pile can be classified in various types based on the pile length and the type of twist involved.
