College Dorm Bedding Tips

Sheeba Nambiar
The bedding of your college dorm must be one of the most essential items on your shopping list while preparing for college. Here's some help...
When in college, the dorm is our home and the bed is our haven. Besides spending a substantial amount of time in college, we tend to spend most of our time in our dorms, on our bed. It is the most safe and cozy place, where we sleep, eat, study, chat with our friends, etc.
So, if it is such an inevitable part of our life in college, then why not give it a personal touch, and why not give that precious bed an identity which resembles ours, by choosing the right bedding?
Our bed is our most precious possession, and it is our closest material companion in joy and sorrow, and hence, we must spare some time to decide on the type, comfort, and the appearance.

Mattress Pad

Mattresses provided in dorms are hard and uncomfortable, and they would definitely cause back pain.
To avoid this, it is better that you get yourself a quality mattress pad or a bed topper. You could buy one that is of memory foam or an egg crate material.

Twin XL Sheet

The size of the sheet is a very important aspect that needs to be kept in mind when making purchases.
Twin XL is the most popular size as these days, most of the colleges furnish their dorms with twin XL beds.
It is important that you buy multiple set of sheets, as it would not be possible for you to launder your bedding every two weeks. Also, do remember to get a weather check of the place where your college is located, as most of your bedding shopping would be based on this factor.
So, if it is usually cold there, it is advisable to buy flannel sheets, and if it has a warmer climate, then you could use cotton jersey sheets.

Comforter

Not all the students going to college would require to buy a comforter, although the decision to buy one entirely depends on the weather condition of the place where you are going. You would need comforters if you are going to colder regions and places where it is mostly colder during the nights.
If not, you would only require blankets. You will have to wash the comforters when you are in college, so get one that is washable. It would be better if it is also wrinkle-free.

Pillows

Some people are very particular and possessive about their pillows.
If you are one of them, then take your present pillow along with you to the dorm. If it is anyway time to buy a new one, then do so
And for people who don't have any particular preference, they can choose from the variety of soft, medium, and firm pillows. Needless to say, you would need the pillowcases as well. You need not limit yourself to taking just one pillow; plenty of pillows are always cozy.

Quilt

It is not imperative to buy a quilt, but if you are someone who likes to decorate their bed, then this will be a nice add-on to your basic bedding. You can get quilts ranging from plain and simple, to the ones that come with pillow shams to match the quilt.

Color and Fabric

Be it a bedding for girls or for boys, the fabric of the bedding should be durable, and should last for a considerable amount of time (Remember you do not want to spend your money on buying a new bedding every semester!) Next comes the color of the bedding
While the color for guys could range from dark blue to brown to even black, girls can stick to cute favorites like pink and green, with a slightly darker shade. Why dark colors? Because, if you choose to stick with white or any lighter shade, then it gets grimy quickly.
If you wish to be more creative, and if you are wanting to make your bedding more stylish, then you indeed can. There are many stores that provide a wide variety of designs and patterns pertaining specifically for boys and girls. You could also shop online, and what could be more fascinating than customizing your own bedding!
