Accent Wall Color Ideas

Sujata Iyer
Here are some ideas for accent walls that are sure to strike a chord with your creative self. Go through them, use what you like and modify what you want!
An accent wall is a wall that is meant to be the focal point of your room. It grabs your attention with its unique appearance. In order to make this wall look unique, you could paint it in a color that is different from the other walls in the same room and enhance it further with more improvisations.
Keep some points in mind when you decide to paint your accent wall: it should contrast the color of the other walls, should look pleasing to the eye (a wrong color combination can have quite a jarring effect), it should be complemented by accessories that go with the color scheme and it should ideally not have any doors or windows. Here are some ideas.

Black and Gray

Don't cringe at the mention of black. Contrary to popular belief (something about black being depressing, sigh!), black is one of the best colors that you can use to paint an accent wall.
It will add a touch of stylish elegance and panache to your room, which you may have been looking for (who isn't, right?). However, there's one very important point that you need to take into consideration.
The other walls of the room should be painted in a shade of dull gray for the best effect that the color combination can deliver.
Also, make sure that the accessories in the room are well co-ordinated, color wise. For making the accent wall look even more glamorous, you can have a huge semi-circular mirror hung on it. Alternatively, you can have a geometric design like a square, or a triangle painted to depict a 3D effect.

Chocolate Brown and Ivory

You know, this idea won't even take you that long. For it, we're assuming that you have ivory (or some shade of white or another very light pastel shade like cream) walls.
For your accent wall, have it painted in a shade of deep chocolate brown. The contrast effect will get well established with this. To further enhance it, you can have an artist draw some stick figures depicting some sort of activity.
Another thing you can do is, have a huge sculpture in plain white placed right in front of the accent wall. Nothing else should be placed around it. This will ensure that this wall is indeed the focal point of the room.

Yellow and Blue

The given options seem to muted for you? Need something that screams bold, loud and life? Paint a wall in a Mediterranean color, to give your room a vibrant mix of colors.
Have all walls, except the intended accent wall, painted in a very light shade of blue. The lightest shade of powder blue, to be precise.
Now, the accent wall needs to be painted in an over-the-top, sunshine-bright yellow! To further bring in the Mediterranean feel into your room, place a couple of potted plants, which have luscious, green, fanned leaves, in front of the accent wall. Else, you can have a huge painting or sketch hung in a dark bordered frame.

Gold and Green

Relax! This idea will not make your room look too snazzy! First off, have your walls painted in a lighter shade of apple green. Your accent wall needs to be painted in a shade of gold that you're comfortable with.
It is your house after all. So, pick out a metallic paint that comes in a shade of gold that will give your room a 'blazing' effect. Since this is the focal point of your room, you can consider something unique like having some witty quotes painted on the wall. You may also want to simply hang your flat screen TV on the wall to complete it!
Accent walls are a surprisingly simple way to give your room a classy look. All it needs is a good sense of color combination and using the right furniture to complement the wall and proper care of the wall. So, go ahead and give your home a fancy look by painting just one wall!
